Slideshare makes it easy to upload and share presentations, documents, videos for free. I would like to thank the team for making this possible. But there are some things making me mad, I don’t know how many time I did like they do in The Big Lebowski:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXT0gOk1Ogw

The Big Lebowski Fucking Short Version

F**k the upload tool
It’s great approach to build an user interface with as few steps as possible. Kudos for that. The upload tool itself works pretty well, but every upload gets published automatically, without the permission of the user. I’m missing a final preview allowing me to publish the upload after hitting a “OK” button. Another way to solve this problem would be to add a “hide” option when the user selects a file for upload.

F**k the type recognition
The document type recognition automatically sets the type of uploaded files to presentation, document or video. While video files are easy to distinguish, the recognition fails at differing presentatios and documents. I admit: Every time the document was recognised as the opposite type -- for example as presenation when I think it was a document -- it was my foult, the file was created with wrong settings by me. Nevertheless the lack of commuincation between the service and the user is a big part of the problem. After uploading a document, my file shows up in the wrong section without telling me. Please communicate with me why the file is recognised as a document or presentation. Actually there is no way to control or change the type.

F**k this retarded interface
A least the interface of Slideshare is retarded. It’s not about the design, it’s all about the interface lag. When I’m uploading different documents and they are wrong, I have to delete them. In this case a lot of my actions are not recognized or displayed properly. Did I deleted a file? Did I changed a name? It still looks the same. After logging out of Slideshare misterious things happen: The wrong files are deleted, unwanted uploads still appear. That’s why I’ve started to log out and log in every time I’m changing something on Slideshare only to avoid this. Please Slideshare team, prevent this interference and keep the interface up to date!

<fb:like href='http://birgerking.net/noise/why-slideshare-sucks-fucking-short-version/' layout='button_count' show_faces='true' width='400' action='like' colorscheme='light' />

A both amusing and interesting adventure in which Mr. Zimbardo illustrates how our individual perspectives of time affect our social coexistence. At the end of the video Mr. Zimbardo describes why young people consume time from a totally different perspective. Thanks to derdoc for the link!

A whiteboard sketch about an integrated online feedback strategy including online channels, web site, analytics, crm, customer feedback and recommendations. This Map is made for printshops, the basic structure could be used for any other business with some changes.

The key element of the strategy is the “Electronic Line Of Visibility (eLOV)”. The “Line Of Visibility” is a strategy to describe the areas of contact with customers. eLOV does the same for online communication. The idea of the map is to close feedback loops between customers and employees as well as employees only.

A few days ago I saw the La Roux “Bulletproof” music video for the first time. I was surprised by the visual style, reminding me of the early Cindy Lauper (80′s pop rocker), the “Tron” movie (clean and simple) and design elements I have seen before in Daft Punk music videos (lens flare, colors). What really strucked me: This video has been published in May 2009 – a year ago!

Yesterday I saw the “On a mission” music video performed by Gabriella Cilmi. This track has been released in January 2010 and is much more a classic dance music video than La Roux. It is set into a space frontier plot and is a great reminiscence to the visual style from the late 80′s and the interstellar science fiction/fantasy art from the 50′s and 60′s.

While I was searching for videos which remind me to these styles, I stumbled upon the Tron 2 trailer. I think all these examples proof that our culture is heading into an new era of design: Post-Futurism. The “new thing” seems to be that technology which surrounds us today – like Smartphones, Tablets, Websites, Online Services, Mobile Internet – make visions from the past more tangible than ever. Which is great, because the imagery of classic futurism is shared with equal ideas across the world: Unity, freedom, new frontiers.

Communities and networks have existed before Web 2.0 and Social Media. People have always connected and collaborated, by sharing ideas, concepts, points of view. The historic context of communities remains visible, it is the reason why a lot of Web 2.0 services and social networks use names borrowed from real-life precursors — Facebook, for example. Students have been connected before, by virtue of their alumni status. A facebook documents one’s participation in a group. Metaphorically, it’s a hub that unites and keep the members connected after they graduate. Web 2.0 reinvents this interconnectedness of community members. Facebook, for example, allows them to connect easy and effectively across geographical barriers, 24/7/365. Web 2.0 and Social Media lowers physical and social barriers to maintaining a connection with people, to sharing of interests, ideas, information. But it is important to remember that a community has existed before as a real-world entity.

<fb:like href='http://birgerking.net/relation/the-real-communal-connection/' layout='button_count' show_faces='true' width='400' action='like' colorscheme='light' />

Today @bahne tweeted a message, shouting a big ‘thank you’ for sharing the detailed LeWeb’09 participant list. The list includes names, countries, companies for most of the participants. Looking at this long table with 1550 (updated Dec 04, 2009: 2055) entries I was thrilled by the large number of companies and countries. But hey, this is just a table without emotion. That’s why I’ve created a visual each of the participants companies and countries. My incentive was to create the visuals using only free software tools.

Step 1: It was neccessary to reprocess the table data. I did this using Open Office to create a new spreadsheet and checked wrong entries using Google Search and free people search services.

Step 2: I exctracted a list of company names and created a wordle word cloud, using the free Wordle service. I adjusted the colors and selected a template, which really easy with wordle. The following image was created my LeWeb’09 Companies visual, also available on flickr:
Version 1.1 updated Dec 06, 2009

Step 2b: Then I started to reformat, check and count the countries. The following list is created with Open Office and shared with you using Google Docs document sharing. LeWeb’09 participants by countries (public list):
Version 1.1 updated Dec 06, 2009

Step 3: Participants countries visualisation. I did some research for free online tools to create a piechart from the list. There are a few services online (read this mashable post), but watching the results I realized that I need another way to visualize the countries. Speaking from countries – what about a world map? The result of my search is the following map, made with Google Geomap service. It’s really easy, only a few lines of HTML code and the map was finished. Thanks Google!
Version 1.1 updated Dec 06, 2009

If you want to embedd this map on your blog or website, simply post this snipped in HTML mode. To adjust the width change the number 775 to a width that fits with your blog/website:

<iframe width="775" height="600" frameborder="0" src="http://birgerking.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/geomap_leweb09.html" style="border:1px solid #cccccc; overflow:visible; overflow-y:hidden; padding:0; margin:0;"></iframe>

<fb:like href='http://birgerking.net/relation/leweb09-visuals/' layout='button_count' show_faces='true' width='400' action='like' colorscheme='light' />

Within the last twelve months I did a lot of research about social media, online communication and conversation measurement. To collect useful bits of information I wrote small paper notes, an approach I borrowed from the GTD method. The notes took thier place on the notice-board, reminding me on the relevant topics while I was surfing through the web of infite distraction. The close of the 2009 is near and it’s time for a wrap up. Yesterday I took the notes down and created a mindmap. Feel free to watch and comment the mindmap. Meanwhile I am sitting before an empty board, thinking about 2010 topics.

Yesterday I’ve been reading Samir Balwani’s great blog post about social media measurement. Reading the post and the comments, I’ve been directed to Jeff Hammonds blog post about social media metrics. And the combination of both posts opened my eyes.

Bandwith indicators are unsuitable for measurement of social media ROI. Bandwith is the indicator of the generation push. Social medias nature is pull. People only listen to thinks they care about. Your bandwith maybe high, your marketing KPI may be great – but your company crashed because nobody cares about your products.

Back to start. The bandwith indicator was made by a few guys. Thier effort was to measure the bandwith of marketing and advertising. They used bandwith as a benchmark and while more and more people used it, bandwith itself became a rule. But that’s a long time ago. It’s time to create new indicators. Free your mind and use a different term. I’ll call them “proxies” or “a proxy”. Proxies because it’s a known word from webtech and it describes what it is: A placeholder.

It’s time to develop social media proxies. These proxies measure “weak values”. This values are not direct bound to your work, the work of your deparment, the work of your company. But used wisely a “weak value” tells a story about the customers conception outside of the circle of control. And it’s nothing else than a placeholder, like bandwith is too. A proxy.

Here’s a wikimap showing social media proxies. Measurement placeholders capturing the social media circles of culture, conversation and commerce. Feel free to edit and update this map. May the bandwith rest in peace!

About three month ago I’ve posted my first Social Media Sketch. Meanwhile a lot of things happend and so I thought it would be the nice to update my sketch. And if you think you know this one, you are wrong! I’ve improved the colors and the structure but most of all I’ve updated the content. Some weak parts are replaced by more general and systematic information.

First of all a big shout to the viewers and participants of my first sketch! Thank you very much for your help to improve the small things and for the discussions. Extra hug goes to 802.11, for her creation of the Social Media Landscape chart. Great work!

The first sketch was a test, both of my own experiences and public interest. Someone commented my first work with “what a beautiful mind!”, which was a praise with a big smile. I’ve watched the movie, and I feel lucky to tell you that I’m just a guy who wants to digg deeper into social media. And I thought only a few people would be interested at all. So I just painted together what was important for me, uploaded the picture on flickr and posted the link. The chart was and will be incomplete, its only a selection of the things I (or: we) know. But in some points I’ve missed my goals. The first sketch was full of clutter and noise.

With the Easter Edition I’ve tried to avoid clutter and noise. First of all I’ve added some structure and headings to the sketch. The sketch is divided into six areas The Clouds; Tribes And Crowds; The Real World; Business Landscape; Spreadable Media; Collaboration Content; Extend Yourself Now; plus additional content The Geeks And The Newbies; Visual Leader; Jump Over The Fence; Mainstream Media. The main idea is still the same, but I’ve improved the division of the areas. The plus of structure is payed with smaller spaces for each area. I had to collect important things. That’s why a lot of weak parts are gone, especially some additional phrases.

Others, like the Groundswell Model and the implementation plan are replaced by more general and systematic content. Groundswell only tells you what to do, not what happens in social media. Implementation plans are no information from inside the social media cloud, too. The Spreadable Media Concept and Collaborate Content Concept are more accurate methods to describe social media. Spreadable Media is a great concept about the main question of what makes content spread in media and culture. If you have not heard or read about it you should do it now! Collaborate Content Concept is a homebrew by myself with additions from the Spreadable Media Concept and really old stuff I’ve found. I think it fits perfectly, including the shift of authority from mainstream media. The Business Modell Evolution is updated and there is more information here.

<fb:like href='http://birgerking.net/attention/social-media-sketch-easter-edition-09/' layout='button_count' show_faces='true' width='400' action='like' colorscheme='light' />

Thanks to my buddy Digitalmind, he send me the link of the Social Colliders website. The service analyzes Twitter and shows a chart based on a keyword and corresponding posts. Here is an image of the output:

The creators of Social Collider describe that they build the service “With the Internet’s promise of instant and absolute connectedness, two things appear to be curiously underrepresented: both temporal and lateral perspective of our data-trails. Yet, the amount of data we are constantly producing provides a whole world of contexts, many of which can reveal astonishing relationships if only looked at through time.”

It’s easy to use the service: Enter a keyword, choose search from “user”, “phrase” or “trends”, select the length of the history from one day to one month and hit the “collide!”-button. A blank grid opens, like shown in the picture above. Then, slowly, the chart gets dotted while the service is processing the data. The dots represent post, they are seperated horizontal with a column for each user. On the left side is the selected timeline, starting with the actual date on top. It’s fun to watch the number of dots growing over the chart. The Posts are connected with line so the flow of the conversation is visible and these connections organically grew from one post to another.

That’s really nice. But I would like to see some functions to digg deeper and easier into the data. Sorry for this, but the processed information is not very useful. The first thing I would invent is a button do “deactivate” the growing connections between posts. A simple static view does the same and is faster. I would like to see the reply posts between users with a dropdown to define “friends” from two to ten replies as a minimum criteria. The visualisation of this data should show the numbers of relevant posts between users (or what we’ve defined as “friends”). The last function is a dropdown to select the actual number of followers in steps of thousands. This criteria is important in correlation to the number of replies a user sends a “friend”. With this options this tool would compute the real social collusion!

Social Collider is a great example of state-of-the-art infodesign using real time web technology. The layout is perfect, the colors are well chosen, tooltips with message include a change of the grid in the background. Really good work from the design point of view. Kudos!

<fb:like href='http://birgerking.net/converse/social-collider-would-be-useful-with-a-real-target/' layout='button_count' show_faces='true' width='400' action='like' colorscheme='light' />

Great visualization! Please visit her Flickr page an leave a comment for her great work! The visual shows the flow of information between users and the influence of each other. Informations are displayed as water. When users aggregate informations, they steam up and collect as internet-clouds. Growing clouds create energy, the discharging power is displayed as lightning which bleed off on users/socities surface. Examples for energy discharge are Wikipedia or the change of the music industry. Other influences could be discovered with this visual, for example the future of data mining on database layers.

Thank you for every comment, participation and enhancement on this project. We are searching for partners who support the develoment of an interactive visual for touchscreen or iPhone. A skilled 3D-interactive-desigern is already supporting us.

Google announced the shutdown of many experimental products that weren’t really generating any revenue: Notebook, Dodgeball, Catalog Search and Jaiku. Google Reader survived the “bloodbath”, like Mashable.com called it. The Question is: How to make money with Google Reader? Here is what I suggest:

A feed reader assistant

When you are following hundreds of feeds, there are a lot of informations you probably never want to read, because you are only interested in some of them. The oportunity of Google Reader: Provide a service, which automatically sets posts to read and only leave the relevant posts marked as unread.

How does it work?

Fist I have to point out, that an opt-in solution (like a spam-filter) won’t work for me. The reason is: Newsfeeds are about information I want to see. Usually I don’t know which information is relevant until I read the caption and the first lines. With opt-in any corresponding information will be bannend as soon as I checked it as unwanted, without really knowing whats going on. Thats not what I need, I want intelligent filters. An opt-out solution with user request would be much better, because it does only what I had determinded and known. I would interact with the system and control the flow of information manually.

Tweak the assistant

Now Google Reader has to know, which information is important for me. There is the classic RSS reader view. Each post has a button to set all similar posts as read. When I click on this button, a small window pops up and shows me the similar posts, each with caption and some lines of content. While this sounds to be something like a spam filter, it’s different: It’s not only about the words, its about the root of information too. With root of information I mean the original post and therefrom aggregated information. If I’m not interested in particular information, I’m not interested in informations gathering around it. That’s imporant when you are reading multiple feeds of one branch.

Intelligent sets

The advanced link from website content to feeds. The usability is similar to bookmarking services like delicious. Open a website, select important parts of the content with the mouse. Start the Google Reader plugin which automatically puts URL, page title and selected content into the form. Now there are some field for tags and categories plus a date picker to select a specific date or a period of time. Saving this file adds a ‘intelligent set’ into my Goodle Reader. The assistant now knows, which information is important for me. If posts match this criteria, the reader shows them as important.

The opportunities

A Google Reader with information assistant would be great! The real power comes from the intelligent sets: Imagine Google Reader showing information about other feeds and websites matching the criteria. Imagine Google Reader reminding me about specific information at a date I had selected, showing me todays feeds and websites matching the criteria. Think about automatic information updates after a period ot time. I would pay for this and I’m shure that a lot of people will do.

<fb:like href='http://birgerking.net/converse/google-readers-opportunities/' layout='button_count' show_faces='true' width='400' action='like' colorscheme='light' />
