I designed the upload flow and have buck-stops-here responsibility for anything technical at slideshare. RE: public uploads. You can set privacy during the upload and conversion. It's a dropdown towards the bottom. Does that not work for you? RE: type recognition, I assume this is pdf files your talking about? What do you want to happen when you upload a pdf in portrait mode?
